Surgical treatments for varicose veins and vascular conditions in Okeechobee

Our practice is expanding our general surgery services to include treatment for blood vessel conditions, both medically necessary and aesthetic. Dr. Moyer is skilled in performing minimally invasive treatments for varicose and spider veins right in our office. In addition, he performs treatments for peripheral vascular disease at Raulerson Hospital.

Veins and arteries, also called blood vessels, carry blood throughout the body. Sometimes, blood vessels become clogged or damaged, impacting the blood’s ability to travel to the organs and cells that need it. In minor cases, blood vessels may become swollen or damaged and visible under the skin. In more serious cases, tissue could become damaged or die because the oxygen carried in blood is not making it to the cells.

Understanding and treating varicose veins

Varicose, or spider, veins become more common as we age. Causes of varicose veins include:

  • Prolonged standing
  • Advancing age

Our office offers varicose vein screening and laser and catheter-based treatments. Many patients notice a significant change in vein appearance after one treatment of radiofrequency ablation and sclerotherapy.

Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally invasive procedure that involves applying heat to the walls of varicose veins. As the vein heals, the appearance of varicose veins is reduced.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting the veins to be treated with a medicine that causes them to shrink.

Vascular disorders and diseases we treat

In addition to the aesthetic treatment of varicose veins, we also treat a number of vascular conditions, including:

  • Arteriosclerosis, or hardening of the artery walls
  • Arteriovenous fistula
  • Blockages to blood vessels going to or in the arms
  • Blood clots
  • Reduced blood flow to the limbs (critical limb ischemia)
  • Iliac disease
  • Intermittent claudication (pain caused by restricted blood flow)
  • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) (also known as peripheral vascular disease)
  • Peripheral venous disease (PVD)
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Venous diseases
  • Venous leg swelling
  • Venous ulcers

Vascular screening services

  • Angiography (X-rays of the blood vessels or heart)
  • Abdominal aorta ultrasound
  • Arterial ultrasound
  • Carotid artery ultrasound
  • Graft surveillance
